A couple of years ago I stumbled across Peter Michael Braun's website. Having not heard of him before, I decided to learn more about the man and his music. Pretty soon we were in correspondence. I was taken aback by 2 huge pieces: 'Interstellar' and the 'Facsimiles' cycle. 'Interstellar' is a 32-minute composition for 4 orchestral groups that dates from 1959. It is a million miles away from the spatial works of the time. Gentle, hushed and restrained, it slowly unfolds to reveal a work that seems to have been designed for contemplation, with swathes of sound - sometimes static, sometimes in flux - given paramountcy over linear progression. The 'Facsimiles' cycle consists of 'Transfer', 'Variete' and 'Landschaft' and was written between 1965 and 1971. This massive 45-minute canvas presents an aggressive, angry, violent, volatile, volcanic sound world where texture takes centre stage. Ideas and events collide and coalesce, musical material is spewed out like magma and full-blown sonic eruptions occur on a regular basis. It is a powerful work that is breathtaking in its sheer energy and dynamism. It is teaming with life.

These couple of works only emphasize the fact that Peter Michael Braun's music deserves to be much better known. Indeed, 'Interstellar' remains unperformed to this day, which is a great pity as it offers a unique addition to the multi-orchestral repertoire.

Let us hope that the wealth of music written by this charismatic composer is further explored and brought to wider public.
