Prof. Dr. Joscelyn Godwin (USA)
submitted on 07.10.2012

Dear Mr. Braun,

Thank you for bringing me up to date with your work. Your own success in having your many works performed, and my own small experience with contemporary composition in the USA, shows that music based on Pythagorean (i.e. traditional and universal) principles has an audience, whereas  serial music is more admired than liked.

What still intrigues me is that some serialists, notably Webern and Stockhausen, were deeply spiritual and felt that their music was the expression of the divine order. I feel that historians may eventually treat this episode as a curiosity, like late 14th-century mannerism or Gesualdo: something of musicological interest but little public appeal.

Sincerely,

Joscelyn Godwin
